Hey!
Just wanted to get some perspectives on this. My MIL is seriously the best, and I feel like she treats me exactly like her own son (my husband, DH) in literally every aspect of our relationship. We live far away, but when we visit, she's always got a special treat for both of us - not just DH. Christmas gifts are equal down to the penny, she texts us both to make plans, asks us both what we want for breakfast... it's like we're treated as equals in every way. We been married for 6 years and dated for 9 years before that. It’s to the point where you can’t tell who is the in law and who is her son.
She's super inclusive, and honestly, sometimes I forget she's my MIL and not just my husband's mom - she shows equal interest in our lives, asks about my job, my hobbies, etc. It's lovely, and I feel really lucky to have her in my life.
BUT, there's this one thing that's bugging me - birthdays. On our birthdays, I get a GIF text, and DH gets a card with a $50 check . Like, I know it's not about the money, but it's the thought, right?! It's like, she's gone all out to treat us equally in every other aspect of our lives, but on this one thing, I'm getting the "in-law" treatment. It really hurts my feelings because I always thought my mil considered us close friends and that I was close family so why on my birthday am I treated the same way an acquaintance would be?
Am I being petty, or is this kinda weird? She shows equal interest in our lives otherwise, so I’m confused.
