"Transgenders"

Why do transgenders find it insulting when I call them "Transgenders" instead of "Transgender People"?
Why is it considered a derogatory term? They don't need my clarification simply on the basis of their gender identity.

Is it necessary to label males and females as "Male People" and "Female People"? Just kidding...

I could care less. I'm just curious.
